In* the New Una Gold Mining 'Compuny'j " mine the rise above No. 2 stope on No. J reef has been taken up the required height for a No. 3 stope to be started, and the latter is well in. hand. The lead is main, taming its width. On No. 2 reef 25ft lave been driven. The reef averages Ift in thickness, and colours of gold are occasionally seen inthe quartz. . , WAIOTAHI G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT.J Thames, Wednesday. . In the Waiotahi mine the manager hat discontinued both the drive east 01;. the reef and breaking down the hanginjwall portion of the reef going outwards, arid all hands are now employed preparing for timber. The manager intends to proceed now with the work of timbering the level as speedily as possible, so as to get ready for sinking' a winze on the block under the floor 1 ' of the level. Another parcel of gold was banked to-day by the manager. A new fan for grinding tailings was delivered, at the battery to-day from, the foundry, and this will be a great acquisition to the plant, which was deficient in grinding power, and will enable the accumulated tail- ' ings to be treated. - NEW MOANATAIARI G.M. CO. ' [BY TELEGRAPH.— correspondent.] Thames, Wednesday. In the New Moanatairi mine the drive from the bottom of the winze on the Cambria reef below No. 3 level has now holed through to - the bottom of the tributers' winze. This will now enable the manager to continue sinking to pick up the continuation of the mineral band. The drive on the small leader at No. 3 level is still being continued in a good class of country, and gold is seen freely in this when breaking down. The leader is, however, small, aid the country tight for good progress in. the drive. At the level on the Cambria 'reef the contractors are making good progress. The country is ot a soft, slidy nature, and not favourable for gold at "present. PROTECTION OF A RESIDENCE SITE. [by TELEGRAPH. —own- CORRESPONDENT..] Waiiit, Wednesday. In the course of the Warden's Court pro« ceedings to-day an application was made for the protection of a residence site, but it was pointed out that the applicant had lost his • title to the ground, and that the section in question had been forfeited by operation of the law. The Warden said in this particular instance he could not grant protection when the applicant had lost his title to the ground, and he would like to emphasise the fact that when a person to whom a. license had been granted, found that he was unable to build within the specified time .required by the Act, and applied for protection, it j would always be granted, provided the casi was a bona-fide one. New Year, and Welcome special claims, recommended. The Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company, Limited, made an application for six months' protection for the Waihi: West special claim. Mr. Jackson, who appeared for the applicant company, showed that the company had, approximately, expended about £150,000, and, though they were only required by law to employ 44 men, they were keeping 85 in work. Up 'to the present no return for their heavy expenditure had been obtained, and it. would be some time yet before the battery would be ready, the excavations, which were costing' ''-from £2000 to £3000, being- now well under way. The company were, therefore, directing all their attention to the exploitation of tiro Grand Junction section, and in the meantime protection was desired for the Waihi West, which he might state was, not an adjoining claim. The application was recommended. IT. Giltillan, jun., permission to work the Waihi Gladstone special claim with six men. It was shown that altogether about £9000 had been expended in proving the property,, and that for the last two months Mr. Langford had been crashing ore which .had been broken, out some . time ago. The latter had also decided to proceed with prospecting work, • but at present only six men could be advantageously employed, hence the application, which was granted. Pride of Waihi: Six months' protection Mr. Mueller, who appeared for the applicant company, asked for protection, as tiefore the term applied . for would"' 'lia.vß expired the company would be in a position to determine upon a scheme of operaI lions based upon results achieved in tie 'Waihi Extended Company's mine. The latter were sinking their" shaft 140 ft or 150 ft below the 500 ft level, and it all depended upon results obtained at this next level as to what course the directors of the Pride of Waihi followed in the execution of a plan for the systematic development of the property in question. They could not proceed further without erecting ' pumping and winding machinery, and the directors were now negotiating 'for a suitable plant. The application wvfi recommended to be granted. J. Shaw: Six months' protection Waihi Main reefs. Recommended. Waihi Consols Gold Mining Company: Reduction on the Haines-Morriii, and six months' protection for the Consols Company. Mr. Mueller, who appeared for the applicant company, pointed out that the company were carrying on boring- operations, and that a depth of 1021 ft had been penetrated at a cost of £853. The company were doing their best to test their property, and altogether something like £1726 had been expended in exploration work at the present time. The company were anxious to concentrate their efforts on the . IlaincsMorrin, whore the boring was being conducted. The applications were recommended.
