An amendment) moved by th& Free-foodera to restrict the resolution to Mr. Balfour's fiscal policy as unfolded at Edinburgh found only, thirteen supporters. . • .v Mr. Chaplin admitted that ho favoured a more advanced view, but said it was desirable to promote unity in the party. The resolution satisfied his section, and the conference was evidently averse to a fiscal discussion.
Mr. Balfour, who was present, - merely remarked that if his writings and speeches were read with a deter-' initiation not to, read into them -what; * was not. there, they would not foe' found obscure, difficult, or inconsistent. • • . * ; : ■
