F. G. Ewingten; "vice-presidfnts. .Messrs. M. Aldis, A. G. JarKit, and H. A. Keesing; editor, Mr. P. H. Williamjcu; librarian, Mr. R. S. Thompson: reporter, Mr. W. Sinton; treasurer, Mr. A. H. ''.••TOTTED DEBATING SOCIETIES' SOCIAL. j ~' The member* of th* unite*! literary anil debating [ societies of Auckland city anil suburbs held a very enjoyable. and successful social in the Federal Clnbrooms, Welleslev-street West, last evening. Mr. H. A. Keesing presided, and there was a very good attendance of members ami friends, including a number of ladies. In the course of his opening remarks the chairman expressed the pleasure it afforded him to preside on such a unique occasion, the first in the history of the literary and debating societies of Auckland «a which a united »<cial pothering had been he! 1. He said that the leaders of I'M various societies interested contemplated arranging for the holding of a series of debating contests or the inauguration of an institution on somewhat similar lines to the Union Parliament, and be coped that the proposal would meet with general support and be brought to a. successful issue. ' : DfcYONPORT METHODIST SUNDAY-SCHOOL. '■The annual tea and public meeting in connection with the Devonport Methodist Sunday-school anni- ■ versary was held in the church last evening. There "Wo.? a good attendance. The meeting was presided over by the Rev. S. Griffith. The annual report * and - balance-sheet were read and adopted. •XOItTHCOTE PttESBYTEfiIAN CHURCH. . The anniversary social of the Xorthcote Presbyterian Church was held in the Gladstone Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance, and the gathering was most successful. The meeting after tea was presided over by the Rev. W. T. 'Sow, minister of the church. Suitable addresses were given by the Revs. H. B. Gray, G. B. Monro, and the chairman. The report indicated that although the year past had been one of many changes 'work had progressed satisfactorily, and there was much cause for thankfulness and encouragement. Instrumental and vocal items were contributed by Mcsdames JCaguiaeas, Btebblng, Bradatreet, Miss Olllsagham, and Messrs. Stebbing and Burton.
