CITY AND GUILDS OF LONDON
EXAMINATION RESULTS. Thr director of technical education and •manual, training (Mr. George George) gave details of the successes of Auckland students in the City and Guilds of London examination last June at yesterday's meeting of the Board of Education, Showing the results to he extremely satisfactory. Of 105 candidates who sat for examination io ; the various departments, no less than 93 had succeeded in passing, giving the splendid percentage of 88£. Mr. George explained that the average percentage of passes in, the United Kingdom was 57, and thai; the result should easily establish a record for the colony, as nothing like it had been reported from, any other centre. .'

The director (Mr. George) Suggested that he should be authorised to thank the instructors under the Board's employ by letter for the part they had played in bringing about such excellent results, a proposal that was unanimously, agreed to. v The Board;also placed on record a hearty vote of thanks -to Mr. George for his efforts as director.
It was also decided, on the director's suggestion, to writ© to the Department of Education asking, for particulars of the results in other parts of the colony for the sake of comparison. Mr. Edgecumbe remarked that so much was heard of what was done in the South that it would be as well to show that Auckland was at least not behind pther centres ■in ;.. the matter of ... technical and manual training. l
• The question of distributing the certificates to successful candidates was mentioned, and it was" decided to ask. the, Education Department to send the certificates to the Board in future, instead of posting them direct to tho candidates ; in order that they might bo handed out on the occasion of th© annual prize distributions , at the various 'schools. ■ ■
Mr. George was authorised to forward a list of apparatus 7 required 5 next season for technical and manual training in Auckland' to the Education * Department, The appliances enumerated were estimated to cost about £1400, and the Department is to be asked to make the necessary, grant for their purchase.
The Chairman (Mr. S. Luks) reported a conference on technical and manual training with Mr. Isaac, one of .the travelling inspectors under the Education Department, who had favourably received the Board's suggestion in connection with the training college the Board ; proposed erecting on the Wellesley-street site, and after a visit to Whangarei had agreed that same provision should be made in that district for technical and manual training. Mr. Luke added that Mr. Isaac had been supplied with plans of the proposed buildings and her necessary data which would be brought under the notice, of the Department '~on' his return to Wellington. ■ .*■,,-■■ :'".
