SUBURBAN SANITATION.

The sanitary condition of the greater part of the Auckland suburban areais being most seriously affected by the gross neglect of local authorities to make suitable and sufficient arrangement.' The state of affai-s i« such that unless immediate arid energetic remedial steps are taken the community at large will pay a heavy death penalty during the coming summer. Bui while we may blame the neglect of the local bodies and wonder at the failure of the Health Department to insist upon scrupulous adherence to sanitary law, we cannot forget that ratepayers are themselves to blame. For* years they have bean content to allow the continuance of a crude and barbaric system of sanitation, which wais liable at any time to break down, and have generally failed ,to take any interest whatever in the movement for a Greater Auckland by which alone great metropolitan works can be effectively carried out. The result of their maintenance of the antiquated borough and road board systems is that the whole sanitary progress of the Auckland district is hopelessly handicapped, as it must be until one united body assumes control of Auckland's local government and is thus in ?. position to end this insanitary 'muddling and to substitute modern arid healthpreserving drainage.
