SUBURBAN DRAINAGE MATTERS.
At the meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council 'last evening a letter was received from the Newmarket- Borough Council/ asking the Council to join with the other suburban bodies in signing a requisition to the Mayor of Auckland to arrange for a confer- j ence cf the various bodies interested, with a j view to placing the whole matter of the drainage of the city and suburbs under the | control of a drainage board. '• The Mayor (Mr. J. Parrel!) said he thought > the formation of a. drainage board would;, have been preferable to the City Council " taking separate action in the matter, as it • was now doing. He referred to the proposal ] in the scheme submitted to the City Council, ! for placing a sump or tank at the city boun- ; dary in the Archhill gully, and for pumping j the sewage from that point into an intercepting sewer, and carrying it round to Cox's Creek. This did not seem an economical policy, as some day it would be necessary to carry a sewer right down the gully, and to have another tank at the outlet. If joint '• action had been taken, it probably would j have been possible to have combined the j whole of the Archhill gully drainage with • that of Cox's Creek. The City Council, however, did net seem disposed to join in i any such combined action, although it seemed j that it would have been a step in the right i direction. j On the motion of Mr. C. MeMaster, it j was resolved to accede to the request to sign ' the requisition. ! The same letter was read at the meeting of the iParnell Council, which also resolved to sign the requisition. j
