'•;*&■ connection with the alleged attempt On the part of the Carthusian cnonks at La Grande Chartreuse, to bribe■ the French ■ Premier (if Combes), the inquiry is proceeding. ■ Owing to discrepancies between ,we* evidence or M. Michel Lagrave, the official through whom the bribe was alleged to have been offered, and M: Edgar Combes, son of the Premier, to whom it was alleged to have been made, there has been great uproar at the meetings of the committee investigating the affair. . Epithet* were bandied about, ink* pots thrown, and blows exchanged between several of the members of the majority and: the minority. The members of the minority then withdrew. > . 'L : Tho Premier stated in the Chamber of Deputies--.that a bri'bs of 2,000,000 francs (nearly . £80,000) had be«n offered him if he would bring in a Bill legalising the Carthusian Order ot monks. A merchant who had made the offer to M. Lagrave > said the money was intended for use on charitable objects. The majority of the committee appointed to inquire into the matter are opponents of M. Combes.
