NAVAL BATTLE IN CORE A

STRAWS. London, June 15. It is'reported at Tokio that Admiral Skrydloff, in command of the squadron at Vladivostok, has escaped from that port, and that a. naval action between him and . a Japanese squadron at Tsushima, in the Corea Straits, is proceeding. A report from ~ Nagasaki states that Japanese warships'' ■• had engaged Admiral Skrydloff, but the result is not yet known, - 'THE RUSSIAN REPORT. SQUADRON PORT , ARTHUR. • London, June 16. A recent 'unconfirmed report received at St. Petersburg says that Admiral Skrydloff brought the flagship ROssia, 12,200-ftons, the Rurik, 10,923 tons, and the Gromoboi, 12,364 tons, to within 30 miles of Port Arthur, but, being unable to enter, returned.

Later despatches from that Admiral Skrydloff is now attempting to pass through Corea Straits to the westward, and that he is being vigorously opposed. . His intention is to cause a diversion in favour of Russia and to destroy Japanese transports. *■„ The Japanese commanders had been warned that important naval movements were expected.
