PRICE OF FLOUR AND BREAD.
.• '! _ '■■•} :TO THE EDITOE. " V ■ ' ' —la your article in this morning's paper you ' state the ; price of flour as £7 5s f.o.b. Dunedin. This quotation you will find only applies to sales in Ihinedin district, where cutting rates are 1 being indulged in at a heavy loss to the millers. Flour cannot be procured from the South for shipment hence under £8 f.0.b., costing about- £8 15s delivered. The impression conveyed to the public by the announcement that flour is £7 5s is misleading, and should not pass without comment. You also state that some five weeks ago the price of flour obtained from the millers' combine was £10. There has been no change in the Southern price for shipment to Auckland, which was then £8 f.o.b.' The millers' combine has not operated in Auckland for the past 16 months, the trade being conducted by individual millers. While on this subject it would ibe interesting to lean; why the price of. Auck-land-made flour for the past two years has been so much dearer than Southern. To-day it is £10 10s. as compared with the Southern article at £3 15s. Breadwinners in Auckland apparently have to pay an increased price for their bread so as to encourage local industry.—l am, etc., SOUTHERNER. June 16, 1904. TO THE EDITOR. ' Sir, —Will you kindly permit us to state that your report in Wednesday's Hebald, that flour could be purchased at £7 5s f.0.b., was incorrect? We made exhaustive, inquiries in the South and were unable to purchase at the price quoted. are, etc.,., Bond and Bell.
