GISBORNE ITEMS.
A MEETixo of the i^ijid,Board was held here on Saturday, the Commissioner of Crown Lands presiding, Messrs. Hyde and George Matthewsoa being alto present. The Board intimated its determination to put a stop, as far as possible, to speculation in Crown lands where the lessees, had not complied with the residence and improvement clauses of their leases.; Ada .Tones applied for leave to transfer her section at Motu to Messrs. Mitchell and Clarke, and Mr. W. B. Black his section, also in the Motn, to Mr. H. I. lleid Inquiries were made by the Board as to whether the applicants had complied with the conditions of the leases, and it was ascertained that the applicants had not resided upon, nor made any improvements on, the sections in question, comprising in the whole over 3000 acres. The applications were refused. Motu is one of our most progressive new districts, situated between Gisborne and Qpotiki. At the Police Court on Saturday T. 11. Anderson was charged, before Mr. Barton, S.M., with using obscene language in a public place, namely, in the school grounds. The accused was discharged, the magistrate holding that a school ground was not a public place, as the general, public had not the right of admission to it. He said the language used was most disgusting. At the same Court a well-known resident, George Adams, was charged with frequenting Lowestreet for the purpose of betting, and was fined £3 and costs.
