McArthuiy borough fenginee* : (who, by request of the "Borough Council, inspeoted-thePaeroa-Waihi Main Road), there appears to be very little done by the county in the way of preparing metal for winter maintenance, of the road between Tarariki Creek (about a mile from IPacroa) and Waikino, especially, he says, that portion from Rahu crossing to Waikino, where there is practically no stone. This latter j part, and especially from Cuuimings' Flat to Waikino, Mr. McArthur says, has had Bo little metal during the past two years \ that he is afraid if it is not thoroughly , coated this-season all heavy traffic will be stopped during. the winter. The Borough Council' desire to improve the footpaths in the borough before winter sets in, but there is a great difficulty in obtaining suitable gravel, and with a view to obviating in a j largo measure, tho trouble experienced ini this matter the Council lias decided to obtain a large stone-crusher at a cost of £212, and oil engine, to operate the crusher, at • a cost of £263. It is expected the plant will be at Waihi in four or five months' time, j and in the. meantime the Waihi Company is ! to be approached with a view to supplying I the Council with "200 or 300 cubic yards of finely-broken stone for winter needs. * At a meeting of the Waihi Ngatikoi Domain Board, held last night, the following tenders were received for fencing tho Ngatikoi Reserve:—J. Brown, £107: J. McGrath, £159 3s: G. Roxborough and Co., £130; Cartwright and Arscott. £113 10s; ,C, Halley, £132" 12s 6d. The tender of Cartwright and Arscott was accepted. The appointment of G. Ridford as ranger was confirmed. ; Tenders have also been received by tho Waihi Domain Board for the erection of a fence round the Waihi Domain, the tender of G. W.-Kerhptmi, at £105, being accepted. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, when all the councillors were present except Mr. Saunders, who apologised for hi? absence. Letters from residents of Upper Darbystreet, (asking lot a road to their premises) mid from residents of Hobson-street, near Moresbv 'Avenue (requesting that the roadway bo "formed and metalled before the winter sets'in), were referred to the engineer to report. A letter from 11. D. Haszard, re loss occasioned by the cutting down of the lull in Mam-street, and asking that the matter be referred to arbitration, was referred to the Finance Committee. It was decided to pay half the actual cost of laying down a culvert across the Presbyterian Church pro--party, the Council having benefited thereby. The "Mayor,'in referring to the financial position of the Council, said a few months ago lie had prognosticated that the overdraft of the Council would be down to £5000 by the end of the financial year. He now hart much pleasure in stating that the overdraft had been reduced to £4600, so that they were steadily improving their financial position. A letter from Dr. Guinness, asking for an outlet from bis property, was referred to the Finance Committee, it being pointed out that the Council could not make roads on property not vested in the Council.. 11ns also applies to Roberta and otliars' request lor an approach from the Bui town Road. Upon the recommendation of the engineer, it was decided to &> temporary repairs to Svacnd-stroet at a cost of about £20, and to purchase a road-roller at a cost, of £80 or £90. Fireman J. S. Ritchie asked for compensation for damage caused to a good buit of clothes at last Sunday s fire. The application was referred to the Fire Council. ,
