Eunter and Wilson's on Thursday. The prices obtained were very good in spite of there being more sellers than buyers present. ASS'IVERSAES services in connection with the Congregational Sunday-school were held on Easter Sunday, when semens were preached to good congregations by the pastor (the Kev. C. E. Davidson). On Easter Monday the annual tea and meeting was held, when a large number ci scholars and their parents and friends partook of the good things amply provided by the ladies of the congregation. At the after-meeting the chair was taken by Mr. .Henry fallen (superintendent). Mr. Botterill (.visiting delegate from the Sunday-school Union of Auckland) ottered prayer. Capital addresses were delivered by 'the lisvs. As'ncrott and Stockwell (Methodist ministers). Musical selections were rendered by the children and the choir (under the baton of Mr. C. Ford), Miss Clarke officiating at the organ. Solos were sung by Mrs. Worker, of Wellsford, and Miss Haaies, of Papjroa; also, by Mrs. Mooney, Miss Clarke, Mi's Flower, Miss Mooney; »nd duets by Mesdames Jeffs and Cullen and Masters Verne and Victor Cullen. Eecitations were given by Master E. Finlayson, Misses A. and E. Cullen, and Miss Nlta Mooney. Prizes were distributed by the chairman to a cumber of scholars for repetition of Scripture, attendance, etc. The treasurer's report showed the finances to be in a sound condition. A vole of thanks was carried, ou the motion of Mr. W. Chadwin, seconded by Mr. E. J. flower. PABTJA BAY. AT the monthly meeting of the Highway Board a notification was'received from the receiver of lands revenue that the sum of *4 IGa id, due to the district *» thirds, had been placed to the credit of th* "Board, for the expenditure of which a schedule of works was required. A letter was received from Mr. W. A. Carrutb, of Whangarei, showing the amount of rates recently recovered in the B.M. A resolution to that effect was proposed by Mr. W. Howie and seconded by Mr. Mellae, which was carried; nominations to Dfe in the hands of the returning officer (Mr. J. Worthington) by the hour of noon on Saturday, the 23rd inst., and a poll, if necessary, will be taken in the Public Hall on Saturday, May 7. Mr - Howie laid before the Board specifications for work required to be done on the Bukuwai Boad, between Mallabond's gate and the place known as 007/perthwaite's culvert, tender* to be in on Saturday, April 16- work to be completed within three weeks from that date, to enable this Board to deal with it before going out at office. KAITAIA. Of March 25 a very pleasant farewell social was held in the ball to say good-bye to Mr. J. W. Shannon, J.P., who 18 leaving the district consequent an hit appointment as Government ranger fur the province. On March 23 Mr. Shannon was entertained at a dinner at the Redan Hotel, Kaitaia. Thirtyfive residents were present, the gathering being a very representative one. Mr. Isaac. Williamson, J.P. wis chairman, with Mr. if. H. S. Matthew* u vice-chairman. After doing justice to the very excellent spread provided by the hotel proprietor Mr Goonin, the following toasts were drunk: — "King Edward V 11.," Our Guest, Mr. Shannon/' "The Host and Hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Goonin. The remainder of the evening was uewied to songs, recitations, and social converse, one feature (a farewell haka by three well-known Maoris) being of special interest. Mr. Shannon was senior lieutenant of the Mangonui Mounted Elites, and has been act-ing-captain fur soma time past. His departure from the district will be a great loss to he company The- second annual picnic of the Literary and Debating Society was held at Mr. Hollis' farm, Pukc£to, on Easter Monday. The day was fine and there were about 100 people present. Besides the , vsual games, Mr. Brett gave numerous selections with his gramaphone.
