A LAiiGK number of settlers at Katikati and surrounding districts aro making an effort to get the Government to decide 011 lie extension of the railway from Vv'aihi through Katikati to Tauraagn,, with the object of eventually connecting with Gisborne. One. i of the leaai.ig spirits in the movement is Mr. Mervyn J. Stewart, clerk of the Katikati Road Board. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council a letter was received from him asking the Council to lay be "ore Ministers a request for the authorisation of the Wa.iiii-J'aurn aga raihvry in the next Authorisation Bill. He pointed out that the matter had already been spoken of in the House of Representatives, an;l he emphasised the great advantage it would be to Waihi especially, as it would connect the borough with what must eventually be Waihi's port. The letter was veceived. At the same meeting Mr. Fenn moved a resolution to tin eliect that the Government be asked to op:n. the l'aeroa-K.a-rangahake section, as it would De of great benefit to the business people of Ws.ihi, inasmuch as that their produce could be landed by rail at Kar'i.ngahake, ,and thus save carting over hat is known as Turner's Hill, vhich was a fearfully heavy drag. The opening of (.he section would also mean a big saving in the maintenance of the main road. The resolution was carried, but apparently the members and business peopl' ot Waihi are not aware, and it would interest them to know, that the section in question has been open for goods traffic since before Christmas, and. nearly all the Waihi coal supply is now conveyed by rail to Knrangahako, where a large hopper has been erected, and Ciarkin's lai t;o waggons are now enabled to make two trips a day from Karangabake, instead of one, as formerly, from aero a.
