PARNELL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Paruell Borough Council was held last evening there being present: The Mayor (Mr .1. Pitt), Messrs. J. Petford, G. vV. B.tsiey, 11. S. Briggs J* Slater. J. A. Beale, W. Thomas, G. Fowler and J. Foster. A Subsidy Matter: The Devonport Bor« oujrh Council forwarded a resolution protest* ing against the action of the Treasury in retaining a portion of the subsidy due "to that Council, and asked that a joint protest be entered against this action. The letter was received, no resolution being passed. Extension of Lease: .Some discussion ensued over the question of the signing of an extension of tho lease from the Church of England trustees to the Council of the land on which the hre brigade station now stands. Messrs. Briggs, Slator, Foster, and Fowler opposed the signing of the lease, which is for a. term of sixty years, and includes an additional area of land beyond that now occupied. The lease stipulates that at the expiration of the term the Council shall hand over to the trustees all buildings erected on the land in good order and condition and it was contended, by those opposing the transaction that this would be to the detriment of the Council, and greatly in favour of the trustees. The Mayor and other councillors, however, said thai, any buildings erected would not be of much use at tho end of sixty years. There was a majority of rive to fo'ui in favour of the lease, which was accordingly signed. Building Regulations: Mr. Beale's notice, of motion in regard to the question of framing of new by-laws to prevent the overcrowding of 1 "ml with buildings, and the declaration of a portion of Manakau Road aj a brick area, was deferred until next meeting.
