IMPRISONMENT FOR DEBT.
THE NEW ACT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Christchttrcu, Monday. A judgment summons case came before Mr. Haselden, S.M., this morning, in which the debtor, a young mar., stated that his earnings were 55s weekly, that he paid 7s 6d rent, and had a wife and family. Commenting on the case the magistrate said it might be taken as typical of the kind of thing which might be expected under the new Act. 'ine proceedings appeared to have been taken by a debt-collecting agency. Ho was asked to send the young man to gaol unless he paid the debt. He would do nothing of the kind, but if he had power he would order the creditor to pay for the debtor's time in attending the Court. The advocates of imprisonment for debt averred that only the fraudulent debtor was punished under the procedure provided. In another case Mr. Haselden said he would do all he could to prevent tho Court proceedings being misused against people not possessing means to pay.
