NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Our Huntly correspondent writes:—Punctually at twenty minutes to eleven on Sunday > morning the special train arranged for by; the Rev. Father Gallaher steamed up to the - Huntly station. Disappointment was ex-' pressed on all sides when it was known that the Eight Rev. Dr. Lenihan had not been able to be present, and this without the least disparagement to his substitute, the Very; Rev. Dean Hackett, whose well-merited popularity is as undoubted as it is extensive. The weather was anything but settled, but its threatening aspect was evidently; not • sufficient to daunt those who came from niilea away in every direction to be present at the ceremony of opening St. Anthony's Church. By special invitation from Father Gallaher the Huntly Rifles attended, accompanied by the band. The music for the service was provided by a talented group of vocalists from Auckland, solos being taken by Mesdames Lorrigan and W. J. Ralph and Mr. W. J. Ralph. The Dean preached from the text, ' Gome unto Mo all ye that are weary and heavily burthened, and I will refresh y ? u V. , Tlle speaker referred to the doctrine or the Mass, and. dwelt- with much eloquence and fervour on the love and tenderness of Christ, as instanced in his reception of St. Mary Magdalen. He congratulated the people on. their now church, and thanked those who had come to assist in the opening services. The financial position disclosed the fact that just over £160 had been added to . ;' the funds that morning, the principal con- ' tributions being: Miss Ralph, and Mr. W. J. Ralph £21, Mr. Casey (Hamilton) £10, and' Mr. Maurice O'Connor £5 ss. This would leave a very small debt, which would no ' doubt be greedily removed. In the evening the Very Rev. Dean Hackett addressed a crowded congregation on the subject of " Misunderstanding Among Christian Communities." specially in reference to popular misrepresentations of various Roman Catholic rites. .: ■ ■, ■:>..-::. ; :7
