THE RIGHT HON. J. CHAMBERLAIN AND NEW ZEALAND.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— read your leader on the preferential tariff question with much pleasure. It may interest you to know that your article practically expresses the views held by the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain. When in England recently I had the pleasure of discussing his fiscal proposals with him, and ho then emphasised the importance of our doing our share at this end to help him. I have heard from him since my return, and after outlining his ideas as regards the colonies, he expresses the hope that his views may be sufficiently in accord with ours to permit of our assisting him in his movement. I had intended to suggest that something should be done by us to show our interest in his work, but as Auckland is already so beleaguered I hesitated to advocate adding another to the list until I saw your leader. Certainly the subject is one of vast importance to us and the Empire, and when we are asked directly by him who is bearing the burden of this great movement to assist, it is evident that he thinks as you do, that the moral effect of our sympathy and cooperation will he of great assistance to the cause which lis has so much at heart. I.leave it to you, sir, to carry the subject further if you consider that some systematic effort should be made to aid England's greatest statesman in the manner desired by him, and so ably advocated by you. —l am, etc., P. A. Vaile.
