HAWKE'S BAY AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

Napier, Thursday. The Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual spring enow-opened yesterday. The weather was fine and the attendance was a record for a first day. In the number and quality of the exhibits the show was far and away the best ever held in the district. The feature of the show was the shorthorn cattle, of which there waa a magnificent display, the judge (Mr. J. J. Bayliss, of New South Wales) stating that- they were the best lot he had seen. There was a very fine lot of draught horses on the ground. The following are the championships awarded:—Grade shorthorn bull, Nelson Brothers; Ayrshire bull, S. Standen; cow, S. W. Luxford shorthorn bull and cow, Mount Herbert Estate; Polled Angus bull, Nelson Brothers; Jersey bull and cow, S. R. Lancaster; Lincoln ram, Thomas Tanner; ewe, Douglas McLean; Shropshire Down ram, W. A. Boecroft; ewe, Nelson .Brothers; English Leicester ram and ewe, 11. D. McLean; Southdown ram, Nelson Brothers; ewe, Nelson Brothers; Berkshire sow, J. Jarv-fo; boar, Slack Brothers: Yorkshire sow, B. Gray; boar, B. Gray; Tamworth sow, Nelson Brothers; boar, E. White; black Devon sow, 0. Hopping; boar, C. Hopping; thoroughbred sire, Douglas' San .bran; Border Leicester ram, Nelson Brothers; ewe, Hon. J. D. Ormond; Romney ram, Hutchinson Brothers; ewe, W. B. Allan. The points prize for Southdowns fell to T. Tanner; 1 Border Leicesters, to Nelson Brothers; English Leicesters, to 11. D. McLean; llomncy ! Marsh, W. B. Allen ; Shropshire Downs and | Southdowns, to Nelson. Brothers. 11. D. ■ McLean gained the points prize for cattle ' classes other than dairy, and Mrs. K. Lancaster the points prize for the dairy cattle classes. The ■ society was favoured with fine weather to-day for the second day, and the. result was a record attendance, about 14,000 people being on the ground. The display of hacks and carriage horses was a very good one. The show of pigs was the best yet seen in Hawke's Bay, chief honours being fairly equally divided between the Manawatu breeders, Messrs. Slack Brothers, J. Jarvis, B. Gray, and E. White. The last-named exhibitor received the points prize, while in addition to the championships previously awarded Mr. J. Js.r?is gained that for a Tamworth hoar. There was a fine, collection of poultry, the points p-ize» being divided between S. Crowther and Messrs. Taylin Brothers. The points prize for doss was won by Mr. W. A. Smith. The native industries section contained nearly 200 exhibits, and was a very attractive feature of the show. A sheep-shear-ing competition was won by Mr. Henry Gemmell. The leaping competition was won by Mr. 11. Hassall's Pickpocket, Miss Reynolds' King Jimmy being second, Mrs. D. G. Riddiford's Gay Boy third. A handicap woodchopping competition was won by Mr. M. McDonald. The Lloyd-Lindsay competition was won by the Hawkos Ray Mounted Rifles, the South Wairarapa Mounted Rifles being second and the Feilding Mounted Rifles third.
