Although not so well known as bis monumental, work on "The Norman Conquest,' the late Professor Freemau's "Historical Geography of Europe" proved itself an exceedingly 'valuable contribution to historical and geographical literature. Probably m this special department Freeman was at his best. The work, which was published in 1881, as the result of the labour of many years, has for some time been out of print; but we are now to have a new edition, under the supervision of Professor Bury, whose scholarly edition of Gibbon, his own History of Greece, and other writings on historical subjects point him out as a fit person for undertaking the duty of revising Freeman s work.
