At Owaka, Otago, on Wednesday last, Frederick Harrington, a youth, was charged with ill-treating a dog belonging to F. A Eason by cutting off the end of its tail' Defendant pleaded guilty. From the police statement it appeared that young Harrington had waylaid Eason's dog, had. token °it to a log, and there chopped a piece off its tail with au axe. The Bench imposed a fine of £1, with costs 7s, in default seven days' imprisonment. Accused was allowed 14 days in which to pay the fine. In the annual report of the Victorian Railway Commissioners the year's wen-king is summarised thus : Revenue, £3,046,858 ; working expenditure, £1,938,580 ; net revenue,. £1,108,278. The deflcit after the payment of interest charges is £304,094. The gross revenue is £320,985 less than earned during the preceding financial yeai. This 'decrease is stated to be largely, if not entirely, due to the drought. The cost of the railway strike has not yet been arrived at, but it is believed to be between, £60,000 and £70.000.
