THE VETERANS' HOME.

Wellington, Monday. The Board of Governors in connection with' the Veterans' Home met at Government House on Saturday, His Excellency the Governor presiding, and Sir Joseph Ward, Sir William Russell, Major-General Babingtbn, Colonel Webb, and Colonel Collins attending. It being reported that the building could not be safely tenanted before December, owing to the plaster,lining not being sufficiently dry, the official opening was fixed for December 10. Colonel Sommerville will enter upon his duties as manager on October 20, and on that day will leave for Auckland to personally supervise the furnishing and completion of the home. It was resolved to close both tho home and grounds to the public between October -21 and December 10. The work of providing a laundry and outbuildings is to be gone on with as soon as possible. It was reported that £279 16s 9d had been received since the last meeting. The death of Mr. Hugh McDonald, one of the veterans selected for thi home at the last meeting, at the Christchurch Hospital, was reported, and it Was stated that the list of Now Zealand troopers killed in South Africa had been placed in the hands of the builder, to be engraved on the memorial tablet in the home. The Board examined and classified 14 further applications for admission. The following three applicants were selected:—Daniel Theobold, of Mangawai, Auckland, 22 years' service in the 70th Regimient, Indian Mutiny, Now Zealand long service and good conduct medals. George Foden, Auckland, 12 years' service in the 70th Regiment. Indian Mutiny and New Zealand medals. John Heron, Marlon. 12 years' service in the 86th and 51st Regiments, Indian Mutiny and New Zealand medals.
