A return tabled in the South Australian Legislative Assembly, giving particulars of prisons, shows that the number of prisoners was less by 24 than 10 years ago. On June 1 there were in all prisons 251 .prisoners, in charge of 61 gaolers and warders, the total cost of attendants being £8215. The Chief Secretary has ordered'a report from the sheriff as to whether a saving could be effected by the closing of some of the country gaols. .' " J Whilst sitting in his upstairs office at Prahran (Victoria) recently, Mr. George Browne, clerk of petty sessions, was alarmed' by a pheasant crashing through a large-sized window, which was smashed to atoms. The pheasant, leaving Mr. Browne's office, made its way to the magistrate's room, marking its course by blood and delicately-tinted feathers, and it was shortly afterwards captured by the police, without doing any further damage.
