THE FEDERAL CAPITAL.

QUESTION OF AREA. By Telegraph.— Association.— MELBOURNE, October 10. IN the House an amendment by Mr. Brown,, a- member from New South Wales, that the territory of the Federal nite at Tumut should be extended so as to have a frontago to the Murrumbidgee lliver, was carried. There was a lengthy debate over the area of Federal territory. The opinion held hitherto was to set apart 100 square miles, but an amendment was carried suggesting that New South Wales should set apart 1000 square miles. The object of the [intendment is apparently to cause the Tumut site to have a frontage to the River Murray. Sir William McMillan regarded the amendment as jerrymandering, asd said although Albury was at the bottom- of the poll, the ballot way being defeated by dragging the territory down to , Albury., The Bill has passed its remaining stages. F Sydney, October 10. \

There is great rejoicing at Tumiit,; owing to the selection of that town. as tile site of the Federal capital.

The State Government strongly epposes the proposal of the Federal Parliament to enlarge the area of the Federal territory, and objects to Having a large State within the State. .
