THE NAPIER FIRE.
I [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] I :Nai*ibb, Monday. ' Last night's fire in Newton's block was the most serious that has occurred in Napier for some years. The brigade did splendid work, confining tile flames to one build-■'.--'if.- The insurances on the building total £i?SO, divided as follows:—Norwich tlfiion, £500; North Queensland, £400.; J Standard, £250 South British, £680. "Newton's stock is insured for £500 in. tne Imperial, and £250 in the Norwich Union; Bennett and Queerie's stock £100 ill each Alliance and Phoenix ; Dental Company, £250 in the South British; Kaiapoi Company* £300 ih the New Zealand; City Band instruments (majority saved), £300 iii the United.
j During the progress of the fire a memj her of the fire police named George Pres- ' ling was arrested oh a charge of pilfering goods. He was brought before %} Court to-day and remanded.
