GREY LYNN.
The Grey Lynn Borough Council met last evening, there being ; present: The .• Mayor (Mr. J. W. Shackelford). Messrs. J. Farrell, W. Dimery, J. Currie, W. Donald, J. R. Lundon, J. . A.* War nock, S. Thomas, W. W. Dumper, and W. S. Smith. ,
.The Electric Tramways: Mr. P. M. Hansen (attorney to the Electric Tramways Company) wrote in regard to the line scrapings and some necessary repairs along the Great North Road tram-line. Mr. Hansen stated that the repairs would be attended to as soon as possible, and he said that if the road wore placed in proper repair it would reduce the difficulty considerably. The Mayor spoke of the annoyance caused by the deposit of line scraping's on the roadway, and on his motion, seconded by Mr. Lundon, it was decided, to again draw Mr. Hansen's attention to this matter.
~ A Condemned Stable: It was resolved to request the owner of a stable condemned by the district • health officer to take steps to remove the same, the matter being considered urgent in view of the proximity of the stable to the owner's dwelling. _- " A, Drainage Matter:.Mr. T. Cotter, borough solicitor, wrote stating that the by-law passed last year in respect to ventilating shafts in comieotion with drainage required, amending in order to make it retrospective. It was resolved that the by-law be "amended accordingly. . ■ ■ The Refuse Tip: Mr. Cotter also wrote, as borough solicitor, in regard to the City Council's ; refuse tip, which is situated in the borough. After some discussion it was resolved to draw the attention of Dr. Makgill (district health officer) to tlie tip, which, it was stated, is a source of annoyance to the residents in the neighbourhood. The Sanitary Service: Mr. McDermott, sanitary contractor, wrote, asking to be allowed to continue the present service for another six months, and that the deductions proposed to be made from the payments to him (in consideration of his release from the contract to instal a pan :■' system) be spread over that period in three instalments. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to comply with the request conditionally on Mr. McDermott agreeing to continue the service for a second term of six months if required. Cox's Creek Bridge: The City Council forwarded plans of the proposed new bridge over Cox's Creek. . Mr. Lundon said that a permanent job should be made of the bridge, /and that if the City Council would not do it the Borough Council should spend £2000 on it and charge the city with half that sum. Th© Mayor said the work, which would be done by means of the proposed expenditure, would form part of the permanent structure, and there would be no waste of money. It was resolved that the Richmond Ward councillors, the Mayor, and the chairman of the Streets Committee meet the city engineer on the ground and discuss the matter... ' \ «
The Loan Proposals: The Mayor moved in accordance with notice, " That the members of the different wards 'be requested to report on. the most urgent work they recommend to be earned out under the present loan proposals." Mr. Dumper seconded the motion, winch was carried...... ,
';■;. hi ■■/.' 3 : ) PARNELL. .- . t ;;. An ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held in"- the Council Chambers, Parnell, last night. . Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. Fitt). Messrs. Bnggs, Thomas, Beale, Basley, Woods, Petford,,Foster, Harvey, Slator. . Post Office: The committee delegated to consider the selection of a site for a post and telegraph office in the borough had recommended two sites to the Postal' Department, who had been communicated with on the matter, so that there should be no delay in proceeding with the erection "of the buildings. .The Tramways Company: In reply to a letter from the Council .re" the quality of material used in repairing those parts of Manukau. Road, which the Tramways Company was responsible for, Mr. P. M. Hansen replied that he had given instructions for the necessary repairs to be carried out, but that the prevailing bad weather had delayed the work. As to the crossings complained of, the contractors had the matter in hand. The letter was received. V •
Gas: The Auckland Gas Company wrote expressing regret that the price at, present charged for gas could not bo reduced, but being willing to assist the Council in the further lighting of the borough, the company would make a reduction equal' to the cost of one lamp when further lamps were being arranged for ; Ayr-street and Park Road: A considerable amount of discussion ensued as to the proposed deputation from the Council to the Remuera Road Board re the condition of Ayr-street and Park Road. It was ultimately resolved, " That the foreman of works be instructed to give an estimate as to the cost of forming a footpath, and also for dressed kerblng and concrete channelling, from Ayrstreet to Pork Road, and that the Remuera Road Board be thanked for their proposal re the deputation, and that they be informed that the matter was in abeyance for the present." ■ ■...' ;■ v.,. -
.? Avon-street: An application from propertyowners in Avon-street for a footpath was referred to the Streets Committee. .
Domain Reserves: It was resolved that the Domain Board be empowered to plant a portion of the Domain reserve,' Blackett's Point, in accordance with plan of Mr. Ashley Hunter, now in the Council; and that the Brighton reserve be cleared of weeds, and the fencing completed. A committee, consisting of the Mayor, and Messrs. Basley, Beale, Briggs, and Thomas, was appointed to carry out the scheme.
Engineer: It was resolved that the foreman of works bo appointed as the Council's engineer, provided that the Eloctrio Tramways Company did not object. College Hill Cars: It was resolved that the Auckland City Council be asked to request the Tramways Company to make some other arrangements for the College Hill cars tocross at Custom-street, as speedily as possible, in order to abate the nuisance now existing in the cars having to cross on the Parnell section, which is fraught also with danger to passengers and others. Accounts: Accounts amounting to £668 3s were, passed for payment. ■:;. Reports: The Streets Committee's report recommending certain works in the borough was read and adopted. The foreman of works reported what works had been carried out during the past fortnight. Scoria and Metal: 5 The foreman of works pointed out the difference between scoria and metal, one load of the latter being equal to one and a-half loads of scoria, thus making tli© cost about the same. It was decided that the foreman of works be instructed to substitute metal for scoria where he'thinks it necessary. Crossing: The foreman of works drew attention to the damage done to the footpath in front of Mr. Pountney's property by vehicles passing across it, there being no proper crossing laid down. This matter gave rise to a great deal of discussion, and it was ultimately resolved that Mr. Pcuntuey's attention" be called, to the damage done, and that he be requested to have a proper crossing made at once. Pound: Mr. James Slator, architect, submitted plans of the new pound, and handed in seven tenders which he had received for the work. The tender of Mr. W. A. Clark (£4l) for the erection of the pound, and 18s for seven trestles, was accepted. Plans: Letters from Mr. Ward re the preparing of plans of the borough were, on the motion of Mr. Potiord, read, and after discussion it was resolved that Mr. Ward bo requested to complete the plans by showing the position of the water valves thereon.
NEWMARKET. The fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket, Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr, J. McOoll), and Messrs. F. Bennett, James McColl, A. Seccombe, W. Hamblin, C. Leek, E. Davis, W. Edgerley, and A. 0. Shipherd. Tramways: The Mayor reported the signing of the tramway trust deed, the company having agreed to the conditions stipulated at last Council meeting. Sanitation: The town clerk gave information stating that the niglitsoil contract would end in."August.. s A' letter was received from the contractors, who suggested that instead of renewing the contract for three years the same should be continued as at present, six months' notice by either side to" end the contract. The question was referred to the Sanitary Committee. Scarlet Fever: The district health" officer wrote reporting a case of scarlet fever in Glasgow Terrace. ~ ONEHUNGA. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. ' D. A. Sutherland), Messrs. Colledge, Stoupe, Hill. Rowe, Tole, Gray, McLeod, Glanfield and Rishworth. - Leave of Absence: Captain Richardson, town clerk, applied for three months' leave of absence on full pay. The request was granted, on *he motion of the Mayor. - Resignation: Mr.- Harvey Morris forwarded his resignation as an employee of the Council. The resignation was accepted. Mamikau Harbour: A letter was received from Mr. M. M. Kirkbridc, the member for Manukau, informing the Council of the action taken by himself and. other Auckland representatives to get the Minister for Marino to remove the ledge of rock opposite the fourth buoy in the Manukau Harbour.
Mr. Kirkbride further stated that he., would bring the. question' of employing the s.b.Tutanekai to dredge the Manukau Harbour near the; Onehunga Wharf ; before the Minister at the earliest possible opportunity. Mr. W. F. Massey, , M.H.R., wrote promising to assist Mr. Kirkbride in ■ everything pertaining to the welfare of Onehunga. Both communications were received. ' '
Petition: A petition received at the last ordinary meeting of the Council from residents in' Symonds-street asking for the formation of a new footpath was referred to the Streets.Committee.; ' '■ ■ .
O'Rorke-street: Mrs. Gatland wrote asking the Council if O'Rorke-street was intended to be used as a ." tip" for rubbish. The lotter was referred to the inspector to report. '* - - - More Light: Captain Pitt applied for the erection of. a gas lamp. at the junction, of Arthur and Victoria Streets. The request was granted. • ~ ~ Tenders : x The following tenders were received for' grazing "on the Military Parade reserve:— Farrell, : £12 153 per annum : H. and H. Bray, £9 15s; E. J. Gatland, £8. Mr. Farrell's tender was accepted. Street Names: Mr. Hill moved, "That names be placed on all the street comers in the usual way." The motion was agreed to. .: A Caretaker: Thirty applications were received for the position of caretaker for the scoria pits at Mount Smart at 7s per day. A ballot was taken and the number reduced to the following eight, viz.:—Messrs. Neave, Wade, v Cullington, Thorley, O'Keefe, Filmer, Brennan and Leahy, and a second ballot resulted in the appointment of Mr. Wade. J : '
Market Reserve: It was resolved to instruct the lessee of the Market Reserve not to allow any more sand to be taken therefrom. - . Claims for Compensation: The Council in committee reported that they, had considered two claims for compensation owing alterations, in the streets levels,, with solicitors' opinions thereon, and advised the Council not to accept any liability. The report was adopted. ■ .- Employees The Council in committee recommended that notice be given to all the employees of' the Council that their services are to be dispensed with. The Mayor,moved the adoption of the recommendation, which was agreed to. Declined: .The One-tree Hill Domain Board wrote asking the Council to contribute the. sum of £15 towards the cost of metalling a new road on the One-tree- Hill Domain. The request was declined. Travelling Expenses: The Mayor stated that members of the I Manukau Licensing Committee had charged the Council from £1 per clay to 10s for expenses in attending the committee meetings, whereas he considered they were only entitled to charge for their actual travelling expenses. He moved, and it was agreed, "That only travelling expenses be allowed to. the committee, and that the chairman of the Licensing Committee be asked to cortifv to these only." Building By-law: Mr. Rishworth moved. "That the Council make a building by-law." The motion was adopted.
