THAMES HARBOUR BOARD.
[BY TEIiEGBAFH.—OWN* CORRESPONDENT.]" ';■-.'"•..■ Thames, Tuesday.' The monthly meeting.of the Thames Harbour Board was held this evening, the chairman (Mr. W. H. Potts), presiding. The trustees in the estate of the late Mrs, Isabella Howard wrote through the Camp- ' bell-Ehrenfried Company offering', to lease an allotment at the rear of the Pacific Hotel for a period of five years, at a rental of £18 per annum, the lessees to have the right for a further 16 years at the same rental. If was decided.to grant a lease of the allotment for five years, at the rental offered, bat. that the trustees be informed that the Board had.no power to grant the. right for an extended period. In reply to a letter from the secretary of the Coastal Steamship Company, complaining as to wharfage charges in connection, with a recent trip of the company's steamer Kapanui to Thames, the secretary was in structed to write to the' effect that the charge made was in accordance with the Board's by-laws. Messrs. E. Porter and Co., of Auckland, wrote on behalf of the Nobels Explosive Company, suggesting that a reduction should be made in the charge of storing explosives j in the Board's magazine after a certain quan-■ j tity had been stored, but after considerable i discussion on the subject it was decided not . to comply with the request. = A letter was received from the Marine De- < partment, Wellington, stating that a peti- :; J tion signed by Mr. H. P. Barry, mine super- j intendent at Waihi, and a very large uuiuper:~rj of other persons, had been received praying that a wharf should be erected at--Kopu, j capable of carrying the traffic for the Thames , and up-country, 'but that the petitioners bad ■ ; been informed that it devolved upon the ■ ; Thames Harbour Board to provide the neces- - sary wharfage accommodation. The letter | also yointed out that the matter had been j brought before the Railway Department, « which stated it was not prepared to build ft J wharf at Kopu, but that if the Board should • decide to do so the structure should he cap- -| ablo of carrying locomotives and railway | traffic generally. It was decided to defer ■, the consideration of the matter until nest , s meeting. .. | The Board resolved that it could not fa» fl in with the recommendation of the Alio**' 1 land Harbour Board, re obtaining from Par- \ liament statutory power to grant hono- t rariums to chftirmen of harbour boards. ■ The tenders of Messrs. J. Renshaw and | J.
