LARGE INCREASE FOR THE HALF-

YEAR.

Thk gold returns i from the Auckland district mines for the past three weeks have reached a total o. £68,111 0s sd. This brings tho total output for the first six months of .the present year to £450,554 19s sd, which is an increase of; £84,830 6s 7d upon the yield for the first half of last year. The past three weeks' returns are made up as follows: —Ohinemuri, £65,411; Thames, £1280 17s lid; Coroinaudel, £1419 2s 6d : total, £68,111 0s sd. HARBOUR VIEW G.M. CO. '■ Tho manager of the Harbour View Gold Mining Company reports that No, 2 rise is now up 88ft. The reef still looks well, but lately has yielded very little gold. After rising a few more feet it is intended to open but on the reef, and drive west in order to try and pick up the continuation of the run of gold worked in the early days. No. 4 block is also being sloped, and No. 4 rise is in progress. The lode here shows a fair size, and in places gives dish prospects. A considerable amount of prospecting work has been done in various places, and the mineral indications have been very favourable, ! though so far nothing of note has been discovered. '~ " HAURAKI FREEHOLDS, LIMITED. The manager of the Hauraki"Freeholds, Limited, reports that No. 2 slope has been extended to the break, a total distance of 28ft, making a considerable increase in the length of reef over that of No. 1 stope. The quartz lias been all through highly payable, although no picked stone was secured during the week. No. 3 stops has been commenced and advanced 10ft. The reef here is 9in in thickness, most promising in appearance, and from it picked stone may ? be obtained; at any time. The part of the ; reef being worked on the break below, where the' drive was driven, is 12in in thickness, and lias shown gold, but nothing of importance has been won. BUNKERS HILL G.M. CO. The Bunker's Hill Gold Mining Company yesterday secured 201b of picked stone from the lode in No. 2 stope, No. 1 level. Tho manager reports as follows:— leading stope, above No. 1 level, towards the shaft, has been carried along to what will, for the present, be made an end of ground, in order to preserve the shaft in solid country. The reef here, although composed mostly of pug, carries some com- I pact quartz, and from it we'have secured I 201b of picked stone, while the general dirt ' is of good quality. No. 1 stope has been ; commenced and carried along 28ft; here j the reef is more solid. Gold was frequently I seen, and 251b of picked stone were selected ] from the general ore. As No. 3 stope has j been cut to the boundary, the men are now j employed extending No. 2 stope towards ! the shaft, but no quartz has been broken. I The reef being worked on the boundary up to No. 1 level is bin wide, and very'consistent in character. Like last week," it did not produce any picked stone, but has shown gold at each breaking down. From the break at the intermediate level the reef is being broken along and level with the floor ; it is 4in in thickness, shows gold freely, and has produced 271b of picked stone for the week. ;■■. No., 1 stops, above the intermediate level, has been advanced 18ft, The reef is 9in in width, and shows gold. The winze in progress has attained a depth of 34ft. At this point the reef is divided by a horse of mullock 3ft in width. Gold "was seen in both hanging and footwall portions, but nothing of, sufficient quality to classify as picked stone. .■ The drive being driven at No. 2 level has been; advanced a. total distance of 59ft. To-day broken country was encountered, \ which may be one of, the many breaks we have previously met with on the main fault, intersected in the intermediate level. ' ■'■ THAMES HAURAKI PLANT. The New Zealand Mines Record states that the superintendent of the Waihi Gold Mining ; Company, who inquired whether the Government wished to sell the ' air-com-pressing plant taken over from the Thames Hauraki Company, has been informed that it is not proposed to dispose of that port-ion of the plant at present. WAIHI EXTENDED G.M. CO. The quartz leader in the Waihi Extended [; Gold Mining Company's mine has been i driven upon for 30ft, a mixture of gritty ■> quartz and hard boulders being penetrated.fj The manager expects the leader will be- ' come more defined as the drive is extended. The north crosscut is in 722 ft. THE COLONY'S GOLD YIELD. RECORD OUTPUT FOR 1902. [by TELEGRAPH. association.] Wellington, Tuesday. The gold output for the year 1902 consti- ' tutes a record since 1871, totalling over two millions sterling. r - ° ■ ■ - ■ -i WHITE STAR G.M. CO. ; [BY . TELEGRAM.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT;] . ConoirANDEi., Tuesdav. The ; leader in the White Star; Gold Mining Company's mine, at. Cabbage .Bay, has been picked up on the other side . of the break. '. > It is a compact body of kindly-looking quartz, encased in excellent country. A distance of between 60ft and 60ft will require to be driven on the reef to get under the rich run of gold, worked in. the upper, levels, and upon which the winze was sunk. The present outlook of tho mine is of an encouraging nature. 2_« j THE THAMES BORING SCHEME. ......; [FROM OUR own CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Tuesday. Mr. E. F. Adams, mining engineer, "has just completed, at the request of the Goldfields Improvement Committee, a plan showing the relative position of the area of ground (the old Moanataiari North and Ex- j tended leases) which he has handed over ' to the committee in connection with its boring scheme, and in which ■ the committee propose to put down at least three boreholes to a depth of about 1200 ft, in order to test whether or not a second layer of auriferous country underlies the floor of the Thames goldfield that has been worked for so many years past. The plan shows that the area of ground held by the committee is about 39 acres, and upon it Mr. Adams has shown, at the _ special request of the committee, the position which he would recommend as the most suitable site for putting down the first borehole. The site chosen by Mr. Adams is situated at the entrance to what is known as the Alfred old low level, in the Moanataiari Creek district, almost di- . rectly opposite to the old Point Russell level, in the Moanataiari mine. According to Mr. Adams' estimate, 1000 ft of boring will have to be done from that point, in order to meet with the second layer of auriferous country, and bv continuing the hole a further 100 ft. (making a total of 1100 ft), the downward strike of the Golden Age reef will be met with, which reef is identical with the Caledonian No. 1 reef, that yielded the famous patch of gold in the early days of ''.field.' The site, as chosen by" Mr. Adams, appears to be a well-chosen : one, and there is no doubt but that the approval of the Mines Department will be obtained for it. : I
