FATAL ACCIDENT IN HOBSON-STREET.

A MAN FALLS FROM A TRAM.

A ' SHOCKING accident occurred in" Hob3ohStreet at about a quarter-past four yesterday afternoon, : a man bathed John Cavanagh, oook at the Marisfc Brothers' school, Pittstreet, falling from a tram and • sustaining cohdu3sion of the brain, which a few hours later resulted in his death. 5 ; Cavanagh ;• got on to a Ponsonby car at the top of Wellos-ley-street, and it is stated that some ladies who joined the car just after him couldi not find seats, whereupon the deceased stood up and made room for them. He then stood upon the back platform of the car, and as it took a slight curve near the Prince of Wales' Hotel, lie apparently lost his balance and fell off backwards into .the road. He struck his head upon the ground, fracturing the skull and sustaining severe concussion of the brain. At the time of the accident the conductor was in tho " front part of the .car: collecting fares. Some of tho passengers notified him of what had happened, and the car was pulled up.: Going to Cavanagh's assistance some - bystanders and passengers picked him up ; and carried him: on to the footpath. Dr. Bake well was sent for, and on arrival pronounced the • man's injuries 'to , be serious. I The doctor and a motorman named D. Brown, together with two ambulance men, then accompanied (he injured man to : tho hospital in a cab. He, however, died in that institution shortly befoi-o eight o'clock last night. The deceased, who was a native of Ireland, was a single man about i 45 years of age, and . had been in his late j employ for nine years. His mother • and. a sister reside in Nelson-street, and; he also has two married sisters, one (Mrs. Greon) residing in Vincent-street, and the other. (Mrs. Alder) in NAer-street. The coroner, Mr. Graham, will hold an inquest at the bcspital this afternoon at- three o'clock.
