GISBORNE ITEMS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ■ Gisboune, Wednesday. The Native Land Court is engaged in hearing compensation cases for land taken by the borough and county councils for cemetery and abattoir purposes. Several witnesses for the Council stated that the land was worth. £5 to £6, whilst those called on behalf of the natives, assessed the value at £25 per acre. Judge Mail- will visit the locality and give judgment to-morrow. An instance of how land has advanced in value in Qisborne during the last three years was given in (lie Native Land Court to-day when a property that three years ago could have been obtained by the Borough Council for £10 per acre, sold within the last few weeks at £200 per acre. Nolan, m ihe course of a few appropriate remarks, highly eulogised Mi. Porter'" many good qualities as a hockey player, footballer, and cricketer. He would, he said, be a valuable acquisition to Canterbury in athletic circles. Mr. Nolan then, presented him with a handsome dressing-case, wishing him all prosperity in the future. There is a prospect of Gisborne shortly going ahead with water and drainage proposals, the Council having decided to ask the ratepayer's for permission to obtain the necessary £80 000 at 4£ per cent. It is not thought that there will be any difficulty in getting the ratepayers' consent. At the Agricultural Association meeting, Mr. H. M. Porter was appointed secretary in piece of Air. R. H. Mason, resigned.
