The accidental discharge of a pea-rifle caused the death of a gatekeeper named Thomas Tharburn, at Muswellbrook, New South. Wales. The deceased was shooting in loinpauv with a lad when the weapon, carried by the latter, went off, the bullet lodging m Tbarbum's side. Death resulted in a few minutes. The grocers' assistants of Sydney having failed to come to an agreement with the employers its to the conditions of labour, are about to proceed to arbitration. The claims of the assistants include a demand for £3 a week for managers and £2 15s for shopLauds, a limitation in the number or apprentices, together with legal indentures covering a period of five years, at a wage from 10s a week, rising tc 355. Last year the Ashburton County Council paid about £1000 lor small birds'"eggs and heads. The Council decided to pay the sum of £d per head for small birds' heads, and to request the Selwyn and Geraldine Councils to co-operate in poisoning the birds in their respective districts. There is a possibility that the Southland Comity Council will consider whether it should not give up the strpggle with the small-bird pest..
