THE CITY OF STINKS

TO THE EDITOR,

Sir,—-Ate you ever near to tho locality which lies between Nos. 1 and 2 jetties? When it is low water the smell is most overpowering. The City Council evidently intend to increase the supply of filth into the harbour. Our drinking water is far from being pure, and our drainage as yet is very imperfect. Tlio percentage of deaths under five years of age to the total deaths was; In Dunedin 20, in Christchurch 27, and in Auckland 30. Again, the percentage of deaths of children under one year to every 1000 births is: Dunedin, about 9; Wellington, about 11, Christchurch. 13, and Auckland, 14. pneo more, during 1900 and 190.1, 20 deaths from diarrhoea diseases occurred in Dunedin, 21 in Christchurch, 21 in Wellington, and 88 in Auckland. Good for doctors, chemists, undertakers, and gravediggers, out what about the parents? A few months ago Mr. S. Hesketh, of this city, was granted an American patent for an automatic disinfectant for drains, etc Now, if the City Council would get one, so as to discharge lib of ground copperas, into the drain every hour, much of the nuisance referred to would bo abated.—-I am, etc., W. Grekxshields.
