RESURGAM.
FROM depths of earth, tho' mouhl'iing in the tomb My bones shall lie, by swift decay consumed By vile corruption, and by loathsome worm, Returned once more to soulless element. And mingled with the dust, this body be— From narrow cell, or ocean bottomless, I shall arise, I shall arise.
From depths of doubt and unbelief; the
grave Of peace and hope. Pursued relentlessly By maddening desires to know if I, From nnrernembefed nothingness who sprung-, And tread in pain and want, in woe and misery— By idle chance beguiled or fixed fateThis weary road of life must pass at last, Extinguished as a flame, to endless death. From' doubt of good, and God, and titter . doubt of self, 1 shall arise, I shall arise.
From depths! of sin; tho' long in her foul vault My soul hatli lain, still pining to be free; By sliiirp remprse assailed, liy fierce regrets Constrained to fiercest strivings; falling back To taste again the bitterness of death. To wallow iii the mire as they transformed From men to swine by Circo's fatal draught, Prom counsels of despair, from death in life, I shall arise, I shall arise. W.M.
