THE PUBLIC.
TO THE EDITOfi.
Sir, —Surely there is an overwhelmingly important lesson to be learned from the. present railway men's strike, or anarchy, in "Victoria, namely, that the public, their welfaro, interests, and opinion, have not to bo ignored or forgotten, but remembered. This is a fact-lossoa which labour legislation and labour unions seem hitherto to have been quite blind to; yet, nevertheless, it has to be faced, and very squarely so, too. If society is to exist safely, it can never be permitted for one single hour that one section of any community can be permitted to act as autocrats in the matter of their own particular concerns, and thus override completely the interests and the common wellbeing of all others comprising that community. Never I never! for, such, call it by whatever name you may choose, is but an out-and-out selfish anarchism. In short, it really amounts a case of anarchism versus Government. This is actually to-day the present temporary condition of matters in the colony of Victoria. The Premier of this colony will' surely now have his eyes opened a little to see what is possible when class legislation is too much indulged and pampered. Assuredly a dangerous pet Samson infant this to play with, and pamper. More discipline and far loss pampering would be likely to prove more profitable for all. Parents know this.— am, etc., N.Z.
