EPSOM TRAM FARTS.
TO THE EDITOII. Bir, _« Epsom," in your issue of Saturday hst, made a desperate effort to say something, but what he intended to demonstrate is not very clear. At the first blush one would sunpose he held a brief for the Tramways Company, as against the Epsom residents, but at the end of his letter he condescends to admit " there is, perhaps, grounds for some concession on tho part of tho company." This is exactly what the large meeting thought the other evening. He adds to this, however, that "it is useless to claim tco much." What an absurd remark to make! As though the residents of Epsom who attended the meeting were a lot of children, and needed the one person ("Epsom") to guide them! He evidently must think we do need' his guidance, otherwise he would not have gone to so much trouble and taken up so much space to tell us in detail what we all had good reasons for knowing before, viz., the fares for the various sections from Queen-street to Epsom. Our grievance wont no further than Newmarket, so that there was no need whatever to touch on.the Auckland-Newmarket service ; we have no complaint against that. "Epsom" says he "would bo content to pay even a higher rate" (than the present one), I suppose no one will object to his doing so. But what he is content to do, and what I might venture to say all the rest of the Epsom residents care to do, are totally different questions. "What we want is a reasonable fare on the Newmarket-Epsom line, as compared with what is being charged in other districts. In conclusion I think "Epsom" either lives within the penny section or that he has more money than senso.—l am, etc., Epsom. I. HorKiNS.
