New Plymonth yesterday by the Ngapuhi. Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Oamaru. Mr. Justice Conolly was a passenger from Gisborne yesterday by the Zealandia'. Dr. Bevan is about to publish a monumental work, dealing with the progress of religion in Australia. Mr. H. W. Haybittle, one of Palmerston's ' oldest residents, has left that district, to take up an appointment at Pahiatua. The Hon. W. 0. Smith, M.L.C., and Mrs. Smith, of Waipawa, left Wellington by the Tongariro on Saturday, on a visit to the • Old Country. Mr. and Mrs. James Reid, of Motutapu, who have been on a short visit to-Aus-tralia, returned by the Westralia from Sydney last night. Mr. H. Campbell has been appointed . manager of the Norsewood (Ha-wke's Bay) Dairy Company. There were 36 applicants for the position. > Recent callers at the Tourist Department in Wellington include Mr. and Mrs.- John Goodwin, of Auckland, and Mrs. J. W. Ryan, of Thames. Mr. R. J. Thomson, late assistant at the Waitaki High School, has arrived at Thames, and taken up his new duties as first assistant at the High School there. . At the Catholic Church at Pahiatua on ■ : Wednesday, Mr. H. Vile, fifth son. of Mr. Job Vile, M.H.R., was married to Miss Winnie Q.uirke, eldest daughter of Mr. Quirke, '■' of Scarborough. At Dannevirke last" Wednesday, Mr. Charles Hay ward, of Auckland, was married to Miss Maggie Colville, 'daughter of Mr. C. G. Colville, who is well known in the Manawatu district. Captain A. D. Chrisp is in command of the s.s. Herald, which is to take up the Auckland-East Coast trade, with Mr. John Campbell as chief officer, and Mr. Percy Ross, second officer, and Mr. Murdoch as purser. ■.. . A social to celebrate the return from the Home Country of Mr. Neil Austin was ■'.. held, on Saturday evening, at Park House, Onehunga. The guests, numbering about . 40, " were ' hospitably entertained, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. ' Sir Edmund Barton's second son, Wilfrid Alexander, has : distinguished himself in 'classics at the B.A. examination {says the -Australasian). 1 , The-Prime Minister himself ■ in 1867, won a Cooper, scholarship at this "'. This year the University gold medal for classics will be-presented at the annual commemoration to Wilfrid Barton.
