DEVON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Devonport Borough" Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Alison, M.H.R.) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. W. J. W Philson, J. A. Walker, T. E. Mason, R. H. Duder, and W. Handley. An application by Lieutenant Wall to erect a new boatshed for the Permanent Force on Narrow Neck Beach, to replace the present one, . was. referred to the Streets and Works Committee. It was decided to allow M. G. McGregor, Takapuna, a rebate ot 16s 6d on his water rate, which amounts to £2 6s 6d, in respect of the house being only in use for four months every year. The Mayor was authorised to forward to Mr. H. H. Metcalfe a memorandum expressing the Council's satisfaction with the drainage work, which has now been in use for two years.' Mr. 0. Mays attended, and objected to paying cost of a drainage connection in Wynyard-street, in respect that he had previously given the Council notice to connect all his properties. Mr. Handley pointed out that the property was previously a stable and no connection wa3 required. Now that a connection was required he held that Mr. Mays should pay for it. The Council decided to make the connection at its own expense, Mr. Mays having, in their opinion, previously complied with the by-laws.'

The Mayor mentioned that lie had not been able to see Sir Joseph-Ward with reference to the proposed post office and municipal buildings in the borough, as the Minister, in returning from Australia, came by the Bluff. He would, however, bring the matter before Sir Joseph Ward on an early date. The Council reaffirmed the desirability of the improvement, and authorised the Mayor to -act in the matter.
