THE LATE SIR HECTOR MACDONALD.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.— London, April 6. On the voyage Home Sir Hector Macdonald wrote to Si£ J. "West Ridgeway, Governor of Ceylon, that his uniform kindness would never be effaced from his mind. It is probable that the Macdonald memorial will be erected in Rossshire or over the grave. < FEELING IN WELLINGTON. Thy telegraph, association. J Wellington, Tuesday. A deputation of 20 citizens waited on Mr. Aitken (foe Mayor) to-night, with a request that he should call a public meeting tor tho purpose of considering the charges brought against, the late Sir Hector Macdonald. It was pointed out to the Mayor that there wa<; a feeliug that deceased had not been fairly treated, and it was suggested that this unfairness had led to his suicide in Paris. For that reason, and because of the late general's great services, it was contended that the charges made against him should be investigated, and his fame defended. The Mayor said he could not refuse to accede to the request of the deputation, but it was to be remembered that the information received in the colony in regard to the nature of the charges and the reasons for them amounted to practically nothing. He had previously said that he thought they should know something more before he convened a public meeting. He contemplated cabling in the morning to the secretary of the Celtic Society in Glasgow for information, and Mr. Duthie, M.H.R., was also communicating by caoie with a friend who would be conversant with the case. When the replies had been received he would call the meeting as suggested.
