CROWN LANDS BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Crown Lands Board was held yesterday at the Government Buildings, Custom-street West, Mr. Gerhard Mueller, Crown Lands Commissioner, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. D. Lundon, James Rensliaw, A. R. Harris, and R. Thompson, M.H.R.

Timber Flotage Licenses: The application of Messrs. McCarroll Brothers for a timber flotage lieenso over the Mangonui River and streams to be renewed was granted. Application from Messrs. Bailey and Pollard for a license over the Mangawara stream was deferred pending certain further information.

Sawmill License: Consideration of an application from the Mitchelson Timber Company for a sawmill license over the prescribed area in Warawara State forest, Whan gape survey district, was adjourned pending notification of the consent of the Minister to allow sawmilling operations within the forest mentioned.

Disposal of Timber by Crown Tenants: In reply to a recent communication of the Board with regard to tho removal by Crown tenants of timber on their lands tho Under-Secretary for Lands wrote stating that he regarded tho Board's decision that valuable timber was not to be removed without certain improvements being effected, was both equitable and governed by common sense. Writing to tho Board on the same subject, the SurveyorGeneral pointed out that the Board had been advised by circular, No. 542, of December 29 last, that timber growing upon lands held under lease from the Crown (except under the pastoral' license system) could be dealt with by the tenants as they thought proper. The Board decided to again ask the Minister to permit them to continue to regulate the right to dispose of the marketable timber on Crown lands held under lease or license in the way resolved upon six years ago, and embodied in the circular of July 1, 1900. This provides for payment of a royalty to the Crown for marketable timber cut and removed outside the ordinary course of clearing and cultivation.
