SOCIAL TO MR. AND MRS. MARTIN.

GENUINE regret was expressed in the Turanga Creek district when, lately it became known that the ostriches and. staff engaged in the working of the Whitford Park ostrich farm were .to be removed to the Pukekohe district. About a week ago the last consignment of the birds left for their new quarters, and now, so far as this district is concerned, Messrs. L. D. Nathan's ostrich farm, of which we were all so proud, is a memory of the past. Mr. E. R. Martin, who, for the last nine years has been in charge of the ostriches here, now goes to take the management of Messrs. Nathan and Schlaepfer's ostrich farm near Pukekohe. In connection with this removal, Mr. and Mrs. John Granger on Wednesday evening, the 13th inst., invited a number of friends and neighbours to a social gathering for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Martin. A large party responded to their invitation, and greatly enjoyed a musical programme contributed, byMrs. Wiles (piano), Mr. Wiles (violin), Mr. Bert. Bateman (gramophone selections), also some well-rendered songs by different parformers. Mr.' Granger, on behalf of wellwishers, presented Mr. and Mrs. Martin with a very handsome field and opera glass, and in doing so spoke of the attention shown and warm welcome always extended by them to all visitors to the ostrich farm. He also alluded to the leading part Mr. Martin had taken in ' connection 1 with volunteering, cricket, and in assisting all entertainments and amusements for the benefit of the young people of the district. Their removal hence was a distinct gain to the people of Pukekolie, but would leave a blank in Turanga difficult to fill. In responding Mr. _ Martin, said that the young men of the district took a hearty and intelligent interest in snorts and volunteering. He would not wish to command a smarter sqaad of men than the Turanga section of the Franklin Mounted Rifles. Mrs. Martin and himself were leaving the district with great regret, and would always look back with pleasure upon the years they had spent in Turanga Creek. Mr. .T. J. Carruthers, in pronosins: the health of Mr.' and Mrs. Martin, said be voiced the feelings of all the settlers in the district in wishing them good health and prosperity in their new home. - The toast was fully honoured, and three hearty cheers given for the departing gaeste of the evening. : ' Mr. ■'Martin protK>s»d the health of Mr. and Mrs.- Grander,' and referred to the open-ljanderf hospitality invariably dispensed bv them. He called for three cheers on their behalf, which were given with a will. aDd thus terminated a most en-i'o-yable gathering, tinged, however, with a feeling of sadness over the loss of such excellent neighbours.
