Annio Maria Bernhardt' (Mr. Reed). MAGISTRATE'S COURT.—Friday. (Before Mr. If. W. Brabant. S.M.) Orders were made in the following judgment summonses : —B. C. Roberts (Mr. Parr) v. Edwin Woodhcuse, ordered to pay £2 7s within one month, or in default 14- days' imprisonment. Mary French v. Edward Larner, ordered, by consent, to pay £3 by instalments of 2s 6d per week. POLICE COURT NEWS. Mi. T. Hutchison, S.M., presided at the Police Court yesterday. Drunkenness: A first-offender was convicted and discharged. ■ _ Remanded: Michael Tobin was remanded till Friday next on a charge of assaulting Alary Tobin, by striking her in the stomach. Mr. Martin appeared for tho accused, and entered a plea of not guilty. Counsel said that it was alleged that accused's wife was lu-ng in adultery with another man, and a separation had been agreed on. Accused had gone to her house to obtain custody of his child, and on that occasion a scuffle took place, and tho assault was then alleged to have been committed. Bail was allowed in one surety of £20. Henry Joseph MoKeown, alias , Adam McKeown, was remanded till the 13th I inst. on a charge of using obscene language in Brown-street, Ponsonby. _ Stowaways: Thomas. Martin, Joseph Williams, and Leonard Harrison, previously before the Court and remanded on a charge of travelling from London to Auckland by the s.s. Paparoa without paying their passage money, were again brought up. Tho polio© stated that tho case was adjourned in order til at the men might be given an opportunity of communicating with relatives residing in tlie colony, with a view to obtaining the amounts of their fares. Martin said that the New Zealand Shipping Company took him to London when they were short of able seamen,',, and there left him to starve. Each accused was sentenced to two weeks' hard labour;. Eight able-bodied men were then charged, and pleaded guilty to stowing away on the s.s. Ventura, from Sydney to Auckland. Their names were: Otto Bar, Chas. Daniels, Phil Kielly, Richard Sullivan, Alex. Lindsay. John Riley, John Hemphill, and James Walsh. A sentence of two wocks* imprisonment, with hard labour, was imposed on each accused. A Savage > Dog: Lewis Ormstoin was charged with being the owner of a savage dog which attacked Arthur John Morrish, on the New North Road, Avondale, so as to endanger, his limbs. Mr. Elliott appeared for the defence, and pleaded _ not guilty. Complainant said he was driving past defendant's house and the dog rushed out at him. A fine of 10s, and costs 355, was imposed. _ By-laws: ■ For leaving their hackney carriages unattended in . Queen-street, Samuel McCarthy and Samuel Lind were each fined ss.

Adjourned: A charge against a boy named Ralph Priestly of stealing a lamp, valued at 17s 6d, the property of one Edwards, of Ponsonby, was admitted, and further adjourned for a week in order that the report of the probation officer might be obtained. Maintenance: Owen Latchmore was charged with failing to provide his wife with adequate means of maintenance, and pleaded not guilty. Mr. Williamson, for the complainant, said the'parties had been married; 20 years, and defendant left his wife ten years ago and went to Australia, and had not since supported her in any way. Defendant; was ordered to pay 10s per week towards her ' support. • A Tramcar:lncident: A. T. Pittar pleaded not guilty to a charge - of behaving in a threatening manner in an .electric tramcar. Mr. J. Alexander appeared for the defendant. A tramcar driver said that the defendant attempted to enter a Par tramcar at' thev corner of Custom and Queen Streets by the front door. Witness pushed him back, but defendant got in the car and called witness names, and actad in an offensive manner towards him. ■ . Defendant alleged that the driver was the aggressor, and wanted to fight with him. A conviction was recorded, and a fin© of , £1 inflicted, together with costs 9s. A Savage Dog: A Chinaman named Mon Gam was charged with being the owner of a dog that attacked a seven-year-old lad named Roland Tait, whereby the latter's limbs were endangered. •' A fine of 20s, and costs 395, was imposed, . - : -'■ , V . ■
