OBITUARY.

The remains of the late Hon. W. Rolleston -i were brought to Christchurch from South Canterbury eh Feb. li A and in afternoon were interred in the Avonside cemetery. ■ A very large number of residents followed the remains to the; cemetery, ; and there were also, present, the Hon. W. C. Walker* representing the Goverhiriehti and other prominent politicians,as well as the Mayors of Christchurch and boroughs, and representatives of local bodies. funeral service was conducted by Bishop Julius and Canon Pascoe. Among the " large number of public and private wreaths sent was one from j the Premier and his colleagues. The procession included over 100 vehicles. Mr. George Dowse, the well-knoWn handicapper, died at Dunedin on Sunday. •The death is announced of Captain Tonge, a well-known shipmaster of the early days. The deceased was formerly iii the East India Company's service; and Upon retiring came to Auckland, Where he has resided ever since. Captain ■ Tonge was closely associated .with the Masonic body; and for some years was custodian of the Freemasons' Hall, Princesstreet, a position from which he , resigned owing to failing health» He leaves a,WidoW and grown-Up family to mourn his decease.
