FRANKLIN AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

THE ANNUAL SHOW. t A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The 18th annual show of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society was _ opened yesterday at ' their grounds, adjoining the Pukekohe railway station. The weather proved beautifully fine, and the popularity of the show was well maintained, the various exhibits being inspected by large crowds of visitors during the. day. The entries this year showed a substantial increase, particularly in the cattle classes. Hitherto the exhibits of dairying stock have been mostly sent forward by pedigree breeders, but it is a noticeable fact that the number of farmers competing is 011 the increase. This may be accounted • for by the advance made in the dairying industry and the desire of dairy farmers to better the class of their. stock. Generally speaking, the stock .brought forward showed an improvement all - round on last year's exhibits, and competition was keener in all classes. Grade shorthorns were strongly represented, and showed a greater degree of excellence than at previous shows. Messrs. A. Kidd, M.H.R., and Wm. Taylor were strongly represented in shorthorn cattle, and for pedigree bulls Mr. Kidd took first and champion prize and Mr. Taylor the championship -for -heifers. _ Pedigree Jerseys were numerous, Mr. Kidd's stock being successful in the championship classes. In : pedigree Ayrshires, ■ Mr. W. Pellow took the championship prize for heifers, while Messrs. Makgill and Middleton were awarded the palm, for the champion bull. Fat cattle were not numerously represented, but those penned were of good quality. Sheep entries were small and devoid of special merit, with the exception of some good speci- j mens of Shropshires shown by Mi. George I Ballard, whose brother (Mr. _C. T. Ballard), a large and successful exhibitor at previous shows, withheld from exhibiting this season with a view •to encouraging other breeders to exhibit, but the result was, unfortunately, not as anticipated. The display of horseflesh was a feature of the show, and the entries in all classes were numerous, with the exception of thoroughbreds. Some roadsters of good stamp were shown, and there were some fine weight-carrying hacks brought into the ' ring. The draught stock were ~ a capital lot, and Mr. William Taylor prac- j tically . swept the • board with his entries. Unfortunately, the whole of the champion class was not judged yesterday, .but the judging will be completed to-day. Home industries formed an attractive feature of the show, and competition was keen. The special champion prize for butter was awarded to Mrs. R. Bilkey. The judges were: — Bloodstock and roadsters: Mr. B. Burke. Draught stock : Mr. David Anderson. Cattle: Pedigree and grade shorthorns, ' Mr. Robert Wallace; • Alderney and grade Jerseys and pedigree and grade Ayrshires, Mr. E. Wood. Sheep: Mr. F. W. Burnett. Poultry: Mr. Tonar. Dogs: Mr. V/. Hall. Fruit: Mr. McDonald. Garden and farm produce: Mr. O. Hesketh. Dairy produce: Mr. T. W. Jones. Home industries: Mrs. Plummer. The arrangements of the show were - successful in every way, and the secretary (Mr. John Patterson) is to be complimented on the result of his efforts. Mr. James Potter (vicepresident) also did much to ensure the satisfaction of patrons. ' Appended : are ■ the results of yesterday's judging:— 'i- V , ■ . . HORSES. BLOOD STOCK. * ' Entire: Wm.
