HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. • The closing performance of that fine romantic drama, "If I Were King," was given' before a large and warmly appreciative audience iat His Majesty's Theatre last evening. - This | evening the great military drama, " Secret Service," will be presented for the first time' in New Zealand. The mounting of this drama is one of the chief features.'; ' The box plans for the four farewell" performances are now on view at Wildman, Lyell, and Arey's. ■' -,/*'■ . I : ; DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY. : At the City Hall Miss Emmie Smith, , who renders plantation songs brightly and cleverly, has become a staunch favourite. The " ballet des froliques" wins unstinted applause. Mr. Frank Graham " continues to arouse enthusiasm. The Gilardi Sisters and ; the Smith Sisters are both clever and attractive " turns," and Mr. Frank Yorke appears in his mirthprovoking farce, "The Lunatic Asylum." CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Schools Committee was held in the Welles-ley-street school, last evening, the chairman (Mr. John McLeod) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. J. Gordon, A. H. Chappell, P'. Crowe, J. Preston, Win. Sherson, R. Finlay, E. H. Montgomery, and E. H. Healey. Several communications from the Education Board with regard to teaching appointments were dealt with. ~ Mr. Gordon drew attention to the fact that where 1 action was taken in the Police Court with regard to non-attendance of school children magistrates always required the attendance of headmasters, thus wasting their valuable time from school duties. He moved a resolution, urging the Board of Education to take steps to have the system so altered that the attendance J2f headmasters might be dispensed with. Mr. : Healey seconded the motion, which, however, was defeated. MAORI ENTERTAINMENT'S. About 50 of the natives who performed before the Duke and Duchess of York at Rotorua delighted a fairly large audience in the Federal Hall last • iiiiftht by thein clever dances, hakas, and music. A war dance, ■by 13 stalwart Maoris, gave immense satisfaction ; a haka, supervised by Mr. Solomon Nutane, was admirably performed; Kiri Matau, the " Duchess," was the leader of a number of smart native girls in their poi dances; and the Rotoraa Municipal Brass Band, under the able conduetorship of Mr. Horace Stuart, gave a number of selections, includ- - ing ■ The Mocking Bird," with marked effect. The entertainment was bright and pleasing throughout, and will be repeated to-night and to-morrow evening. MOUNT ALBERT ROAD BOARD. The regular monthly meeting of the Mount Albert Road Board was held on Monday evening, there being present: Messrs. V. F. Kerr-Taylor (chairman), M. J. Covle, G. R. Hutchinson, M. McLean, and W. Moor. Upon the recommendation of the sub-com-mittee, it was resolved to at once proceed with the formation of those parts. of the streets in Glenmore to which property-owners have subscribed towards the cost therof, and that notice be given , to Mr. W. Spedding to remove his fence back to the boundary line. The sub-committee on street nomenclature not being ready with a full report, the matter was referred back to them, and consideration deferred to next ( meeting. Several matters affecting drainage were deferred for a month, pending receipt of the engineer's report thereon. Mr. T. Hitchens was- appointed ranger, vice Mr.. Kerry, resigned. A letter was received from the Auckland Savings Bank acceding to the Board's application for a loan of £16.000 at par for waterworks construction. Mr. 11. H. Metcalfe's report, with plans and recommendations, re mains, was received and adonted, with the addition of 4in mains along Winstone's Road and Argyle-street, and lJ>in pipes along Taylor's Road, from Salisbury Road, and that ljin be substituted wherever lin pipes are shown. The report was referred to the Water Committee, with power to act, and to instruct. Mr. Metcalfe to call for tenders for mains and pipes, etc. TE AROHA AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
