THE AMERICAN NAVY.
NEW BATTLESHIPS. DIFFERENCE REGARDING TONNAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association.— New York, March 2. AT the instance of Admiral Dewey and Captain Mahan the American Senate has substituted 000-ton battleships . for the proposal accepted by the House of Representatives for 16,000-ton battleships, on the ground that smaller vessels permit of easier handling. President Roosevelt supports the House Committee, and is backed up by Admirals Bowles ■, O'Neill, Bradford, and Melville. The President's idea is that battleships should be elf-contained and independent auxiliaries.
