AUSTRALIAN FINANCE,

THE COMMENTS OF THE LONDON CRITICS.

INTERVIEW WITH MR. WISE. By Telegraph.—Press — Copyright London, February 22. Mr. Wise. Attorney-General of New South Wales, on being interviewed, said that the recent discussion as to the solvency of New South' Wales was merely the outcome of & fantastic dream. New South Wales' borrowings recently were large, owing to the purchase of four millions of wharf frontage, which had already returned a net profit, after providing a sinking fund. The real asset in Australia was Parliament's unlimited power of taxation. Australians were the most lightly taxed people in the world. He scorned the idea of repudiation, and said the charges of extravagance on the part of the Federal Government were unfounded. The Commonwealth was really too parsimonious, the salaries it paid being lower than those in the principal States. Federation had increased New South Wales' revenue i by over a million, which was a very, i useful, addition.
