Ob. Schwakzbach, the well-known oculist, who some years ago resided for a tune in Auckland, is now here again on a- visit. Dr. Gunning, of Narracoorte, is probably the oldest medical practitioner in Australia. He took his degrees before Queen Victoria came to the throne. The Hon. W. L. Allardyce, C.M.G., Colonial Secretary for Fiji, who is now in Australia, is proceeding to England on 12 months' leave of absence. Mr. J. D. W. Vaughan, Government Astronomer and chief of the Commissariat Department of the colony of Fiji, who died at Suva, was a kinsman of* Cardinal .Vaughan. Sir Edmund Barton's eldest son, who, after a brilliant career at Oxford, was called to the Bar at Middle Temple, has returned to Sydney, and is now associate to Mr. Justice Cohen. Mr. J. A. Springhall, one of the chiefs at the General Post Office, Melbourne, is a native of London, where he was born on ' January 23, 1849. Mr. Springhall is the possessor of an old picture, said to be a genuine painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, probably worth £50,000. Yesterday, at the Supreme Court, Mr. Elliott, solicitor in partnership with Mr. Neumegen, of Auckland, was admitted and enrolled by His Honor Mr. Justice Conolly I as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. The application for admission § "was made by Mr. J. R. Reed.
