The committee also recommended that farther consideration of the applications received for the position of assistant-master of the Avondale school be deterred pending the sanction of the Minister to an appointment being made. This delay was necessary in consequence of the attendance for the Decembei quarter having brought the yearly average below 201. The applications (25) received in answer to advertisement for the position of assistant-master of the Bayfield school had ; been ; examined, and the committee recommended that the names and qualifications of the undermentioned candidates be submitted to the school committee- for their consideration:—Messrs. W. Kay, E. Campbell, H. A. Darrow, W. J. Connor, and D. W. McNar.ghton. The committee had also examined the applications (20) received in answer to advertisement for the position of assistant-master of the Mount Albert school, and recommended that the names and qualifications of the undernamed candidates be submitted to the school committee for their consideration: R. Campbell, W. J. Connor, D. W. McNaughton, and W. J.Caliill. The committee submitted for consideration a letter from the Devonport School Committee recommending the appointment of Miss Daisy Taylor (Taranaki) to the position of mistress of that school. They recommended that' applications bo invited by advertisement for the position of assistantmaster of the Hamilton West , district I high school, at a minimum salary of £120; also, that ■ the Ruatangata School Committee be consulted upon the proposal to combine the east and west schools half-time under a male teacher. The committee deferred their recommendation in regard to the selection of teachers to fill other vacant appointments. A , recommendation was .■ made that action be taken in compliance • with the regulations marie by order of the Governor-in-Council under the Public School Teachers'; Salaries Act, 1901, to reduce the teaching staff at the undernamed schools:—Welles!ey-street, Beres-ford-street, Napier-street, Nelsan-street, Grafton, Newton East, Richmond Road, - Renin- * era, Mount Eoskill, Etlerslie, Pauniure, Matakohe, Waihi. Mr. Hobbs proposed, and Mr. Harris seconded, "That another name be sent to the Ponsonby Committee." The motion was negatived. It was decided to ask the ; Devonport committee to reconsider the question of the appointment of Miss Daisy Taylor, with a view to considering the claims of local teachers. The report, .as amended, was adopted. ' . • - ■ . . ; Devonport School: The Finance Committee of the Board of Education reported that they had. received a protest from the Devonport School, Committee against the proposal to utilise the teachers' cottage as an auxiliary classroom for .the infant department, and had referred them .to the unanimous decision of the Board in the mat- , ter. Following up this protest a deputation consisting of Messrs. O. Mays. Mason, Buddie and Wilkinson, waited upon the Board. In asking the Board to reconsider their decision Mr. Mays remarked that during the 20 years he had been on the committee no friction had arisen with the Board. It was very undesirable that there should be any friction. The committee wanted two UDStaics rooms for, a technical school, and what was required was more accommodation for the children ■ below. The committee were prepared to wait until the Government granted the money rather than lose the rooms utilised for technical purposes. Mr. Mason stated that it would be impossible to alter the old residence to make it suitable for classrooms. The Chairman thought the Board would fall in with the views of the Devonport committee if they were prepared to wait. All the Board wanted was to do its best for the district. At the present time they had not got one farthing from the Government for the work. The Board decided to delay action as far as the use of the. cottage was con- • cerned. and to make application to Govern- j ment for a grant. ' 1
