It has been truly stated that no part of the work of the farm is more important than the garden. It should be good enough and large enough to furnish much of tho supplies of the farmer's table during tho summer and fall; and the vegetables should bo in such variety that none will be tempted to pray foi frost, as did the hired man who boarded with the farmer whose garden yielded string beans almost to the exclusion of other vegetables. The Garden lately said that we neglect dull colours in flowers—greys, lavenders, and brows—almost as unreasonbly as we stint the garden of its necessary white.' Most of the dull flowers are beautiful in themselves or sweetly scented; but their value in a garden is chiefly as foils to brighter neighbours. Look at a carmine flower by itself, and then place it with the grey of any woolly leaves, and you will see it go up several times in colour; add white, and you have a delicate and perfect harmony. At the recent Temple Show in London the Fruit. and Vegetable Committee only accorded special recognition to one exhibit, and that was to the cucumber British King, raised by Mr. S. Mortimer from a cross between Famous and Sensation. The fruit is of rather above average size, very dark green in colour, with a few curiously blunted black spines, and the flavour is beyond re—indeed, several of the most expert judges described it as the finest flavoured cucumber they have ever tasted.
