AUCKLAND " SHAREMARKET. Investment lines were in good demand on ( the Exchange yesterday. New Zealand Insurances continued Ho harden, and lines . changed hands at 84s and 85s, with late buyers at bos 6d, sellers 85s. National Insurances sold at 21s, sellers closing at 21s 3d, buyers 20s lOd. Leyland-O'Briens were done at 40s. In mining lines Maratotos sold at 7d, and Tahna Broken Hills at 8s 9d. Bunker's Hills were looked for at 5s 4d, sellers asking 5s 6d. In other lines late prices ruled. ■ NEW FOUR-IN-HAND G.M. CO. The New Four-in-Hand Gold Mining Company are engaged in exploiting the Tainui leader, which is 9in wide. The footwall portion has shown gold freely, and during last week 121b of picked stone and 141b of quartz showing gold were secured. WAIHI EXTENDED G.M. CO. The Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's crosscut is in 476 ft in hard black country. The manager considers that when this has been penetrated good andesite country may be met with. KTJRANUI G.M. CO. The Kuranui Gold Mining Company's main level is in 110 ft, and the crosscut for the drive on Barry's lode is within 60ft of that point. In the former workingsan ocebody heavily mineralised was passed through about 15ft back from the face. A rise was put up for 10ft on this ore, and the stone gave gold in the dish. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED G.M. CO. The crosscut for the Oddfellows' lode in the May Queen Extended Gold Mining Company's mine has now reached the point where the reef should come to hand. It is thought that the course of the lode has been altered by the hard bar. IATRUA BROKEN HILLS G.M. CO. The manager of the Tairua Broken Hills Gold Mining Company's mine reports that during the seven weeks ending December 24 last, stoping upon the Blucher reef and the Night reef has progressed satisfactorily. The Night reef has been driven upon in the low level for a distance of 266 ft on good payable ore, and the reef in the face of the drive looks well. , * CHELMSFORD G.M. CO. The Chelmsford Gold Mining Company's battery level has been driven a further lift, making the total distance 576 ft. Better progress will be"made in future, as this work is now fully manned. Sinking the winze was resumed on Wednesday, and on Friday last a few tons of the reef were broken down and samples taken, which gave an average assay value of £2 12s 9d. The reef is about 6in "wide. The No. 2 level is being driven south on No. 1 reef, and a distance of about sft or 6ft has been driven. The reef is rather disturbed in the face, though the country is favourable for gold. WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Tuesday. A tender for an uprise of 100 ft on the lode in the main shaft of the Waihi Grand Junction Company was let yesterday to Messrs. McLennan Bros, and party, at the rate of 30s per foot. Work was commenced this morning. THE WAIHI COMPANY. [BT TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Tuesday. The Waihi Company have suspended for the time being- sinking in their No. 2 shaft. The small pump below No. 7 level was raised on Saturday, and the shaft below this level is , now filled with water. Over 100 men were discharged from the Waihi Company's battery works last week-end. A number of them have already left Waihi. SOUTHERN MINING. |

Reefton, Tuesday. In the Progress mines during the month of December, 4169 tons of stone were mined, and transported "by aerial tramway to the 65-stamp mill, where 4600 tons were crushed, yielding 17230z 17dwt 3gr ; builioa, valued £7184 8s 6d. Ninety tons of concentrates were chlorinated, vielding bullion to the value of £933 15s 10d, and 2601 tons tailings cyanided, yielding bullion to the value of £529 9s 2d.

In the Consolidated Goldfields New Zealand, Limited's, Wealth of Nations mine during the month, 980 tons of stone were crushed at the 20-stamp mill, yielding 3090z 17dwt bullion, valued at £1280 14s 3d. Six tons of concentrates were produced, and 880 tons of coarse sands cyanided, the latter yielding bullion valued £369 10s Id. In the Golden Fleece 1200 tons of quartz were crushed for a return of 4980z Odwt 18gr bullion, valued at £2016 0s sd. Nine tons of concentrates were produced, and 800 tons of tailings cyanided, the latter yielding bullion of the value of £367 5s Bd. .
