TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION.
The question of.;_ technical > instruction , was again before the Auckland Education Board (Mr. J. Muir % presiding) yesterday, when the Finance Committee reported that they : had considered % the recommendations of Mr. George, director of technical instruction, for the establishment of school classes in woodwork and cookery ■";*:■. at the three centres named by. him, and recommended : -— 1. "That application be made to the Minister for grants to erect and furnish the necessary buildings." 2. "That upon receipt of the Minister's promise of such grants, action should be taken to engage from England, for a period of two years, three male instructors in woodwork at a yearly salary of £170 each, and three female instructors in cookery at a yearly- salary of £130 each, a sum of £33 for passage to Auckland to be allowed to each instructor so engaged." On the motion of the chairman the recommendation was adopted without comment. A deputation from the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, consisting of Messrs. G. B. Button and E. Hall (secretary), waited on the Board with regard to technical instruction as affecting the agricultural interests. Mr. George, director of the Technical School, was also present, and said that as far as ho could see they would hare to begin with the elementary schools where agricultural work was concerned, the instruction being by means of lectures and demonstrations. Blots of ground might also be provided where experiments - could be carried cut in various matters pertaining to agriculture, such as manuring, dealing with pests, etc. The Chairman (Mr. Muir) said he was in every way desirous that everything possible should be done to afford agricultural instruction, as the farmers were undoubtedly the backbone of the country. .- After a brief discussion the chairman of the Board (Mr. Muir), Mr. Hutton, and Mr. George (technical instructor), were appointed a committee to go further into the matter, and report progress. , « '
